HelpBOX

About the project

The Chojraki Helpbox „Emotional first aid for children and parents” is a toolkit that helps tame and regulate difficult emotions accompanying children in cancer wards and all those around a child – parents, volunteers and hospital staff.

Our goal is for the binder with the stories, the guidebook and additional training to be given to every family whose child is starting or undergoing treatment at the Department of Paediatric Oncology, Haematology and Transplantation at the Poznań University of Medical Sciences.

The project received funding under the DKMS Foundation Grant.

What's in the Helpbox?

The section for a child includes therapeutic stories that address the emotions that children face in illness. The subjects of the stories are anger, sadness or fear, but also the need for love and acceptance. At the end of each story, there are worksheets to facilitate conversations about emotions and exercises that a child can do alone or with the help of a caregiver. We developed the games so that they can be played both on a hospital bed and at home. Each story has its own audio version.

The section for parents includes an „Emotional First Aid” guidebook, with tips on how to talk to children about their feelings during treatment and how to understand your own emotions that are often awakened when a child is ill. In addition, we have prepared a short training for parents and volunteers, in which we suggest how to use the stories and activity cards in their work with children, as well as a self-reg training that helps identify sources of excessive and unnecessary stress and look for strategies to recover from difficult situations.
